Participation in EUREKA Programme
EUREKA Criteria
Every project proposal must meet the following EUREKA criteria:
- Has a civilian purpose.
- Is directed at the development of a new product, process or service.
- Involves at least two participants from two different EUREKA member states.
- Supports the EUREKA aims to enhance European competitiveness.
Thematic Areas
EUREKA Projects cover all technological fields. For statistical purposes they are categorized from the EUREKA Organisation to the following Τhematic Αreas:
- Electronics, IT and Telecommunications Technology
- Industrial Manufacturing, Material and Transport
- Other Industrial Technologies
- Energy Technology
- Chemistry, Physical and Exact Sciences
- Biological Sciences
- Agriculture & Marine Resources

- Technology for Protecting Humankind and the Environment

EUREKA’s ‘bottom-up’ approach to technological innovation allows the consortium to design the project, its goals, the participants and their contribution and the exploitation of the projects’ results.
Participation procedures
9 easy steps to setting up an innovative idea and participating in a “traditional” EUREKA Project:
- You have a project idea.
- You contact your EUREKA National Project Coordinator.
- You develop your project idea and set up a project partnership.
- You secure financing from each participant (from a national programme and/or private source).
- All project partners create and sign a Consortium Agreement.
- You submit your project application form, signed by all partners, to EUREKA via the NPC of the main project participant.
- If it fulfils the EUREKA criteria, your project is endorsed.
- Your project is awarded the EUREKA label.
- Your project begins.
It should be noted that there are different procedures for the EUROSTARS Programme and Cluster Projects.
The Role of RPF
The Research Promotion Foundation acts as the National EUREKA Office since 2002. The National Project Coordinator (NPC) of Cyprus is Dr. Kalypso Sepou, Head of European Research Programmes and International Cooperation Unit. The Deputy NPC is Mr. Marinos Portokallides, Scientific Officer, European Research Programmes and International Cooperation Unit.

- Representation of Cyprus in EUREKA Organization’s governing bodies.
- Launching of the “EUREKA Cyprus” Programme, of the National Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, as the funding mechanism for the participation of Cypriot organizations in EUREKA projects.
- Announcement of Calls for Proposals on a regular basis.
- Monitoring of approved projects.
