Research and Innovation Week

Main Objectives

The Research and Innovation (R&I) Week is an initiative of the Foundation launched in 2013, which has since been established as an annual event. This initiative aims to embed a culture of research and innovation within the society, and to familiarize the public with aspects of research, innovation and science.

The agenda of the R&I Week usually contains a series of interactive events, taking place in cooperation with a wide range of institutions, universities and research centers in every city in Cyprus. The overall theme and objectives of the agenda differentiate each year based on the ongoing needs and developments of the R&I landscape in Cyprus.

The public taking part in the events has the opportunity to experience the fields of science and research through hands-on approaches. All events are free of charge and include activities for all age groups. A common feature of the events is their entertaining along their educational character, and they usually include seminars, film screenings, plays, speeches and lectures, sports events, educational workshops on research and technology, and more.

R&I Week 2020

Especially for 2020, the RIF had planned for the annual R&I Week to take place over five instead of one week (April 24^th to May 25^th). The motive behind this modification was our initiative to host in Cyprus, apart from the regular events organized every year, a large interactive exhibition on loan from CERN, entitled “Touch the Universe!”.

Unfortunately, due to the emergency measures taken as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the events were cancelled.

Past Events

2019

The agenda of the 2019 R&I Week included a series of events held in every city in Cyprus, in collaboration with a wide range of organizations, university institutions and research centers. These activities included seminars, Science Cafés, film screenings, plays, lectures, research and technology training workshops, and more.

As part of the 2019 R&I Week, which took place from May 25^th to June 2^nd, the public had the opportunity to take part, among the rest of the events, in an interactive exhibition organized by CERN, the world’s largest research center in experimental particle physics. This free of charge interactive exhibition, entitled “The Experiment of the Century!”, allowed visitors to enter a virtual particle accelerator and, using an application simulating particle collisions, get in touch with the experiments undertaken at CERN, in an entertaining way.

2018

The varied program of the 2018 R&I Week (May 19^th-26^th) included 26 interactive events such as scientific meetings, film screenings in cinema theatres and on television, plays, sports activities, speeches and lectures in schools, educational workshops on research and technology, star observations, a photography competition, and more.

These events, which widely attracted public interest from all age groups, were held in collaboration with 17 organizations in all cities throughout Cyprus.

Among the event highlights were the cycling tour of Nicosia’s historic center, the Astronomy Night, the “Youth Makerspace” program organized by the Youth Organization in Larnaca, and visits by research scientists to Primary, Secondary, High School and Technical Schools.
