Two new European Research Council (ERC) projects in Cyprus

Cypriot researchers awarded ERC Starting Grant & ERC Proof of Concept Grant

Cyprus recorded new successes within the European Union’s Framework Program for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe, securing funding for two new research projects from the European Research Council (ERC). The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) warmly congratulates the winners for this important achievement, as ERC funding is considered among the most competitive in the European space and a scientific excellence label at global level.

RIF continues to offer practical support to researchers interested in submitting ERC proposals, providing, among others, personalised support, proposal pre-screening services and mock interviews.

A prestigious ERC Starting Grant (StG) 2023 for early career scientists was awarded to Dr Chrysanthos Chrysanthou, Assistant Professor of Ancient Greek in the Department of Classics and Philosophy of the University of Cyprus, for his project “Group Minds in Ancient Narrative” (GROUPMINDS). It should be noted that this is the first ERC project in the field of Classics and Ancient Literature in Cyprus. It will focus on Greco-Roman antiquity, which provides an example of a culture that was fundamentally collectivist, and with interpersonal communication at its core.

ERC Proof of Concept (PoC) Grant 2022 aimed at facilitating the exploration of the commercial and social innovation potential of ERC funded research, was awarded to Dr Ioannis Krikidis, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus, Director of the IRIDA Research Center for Communication Technologies, for the project “Enabling Wireless Information and Power Transfer through Low-Complexity Waveform Techniques” (WAVE). The project aims at demonstrating in real-world scenarios two novel multisine-based Wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) waveforms, which have been developed in the frame of Dr Krikidis’ ERC Consolidator Grant APOLLO.

ERC organises an online event on 20 September 2023 on its new Calls for Proposals under the 2024 Work Programme.
